Where to begin or where to end. He will be missed by all. In all the years I knew Bob I never heard a bad word said about him. He helped me when I first starte shoeing horses and training. He allways had the wright answer to a question and if he didn't know it he would find and study the facts before he would answer the question. He told me once to teach a horse something you had to do it correctly 100 times. Every time he did it wrong another 100. A lesson I have never forgotten out of the many. He is lucky in a way because he enjoyed his life and what he did. Not all can say they have done that. He will be missed by many. I wish I could attend but have other obligations here at home. Bob thank you for all the lessons learned.

I was one of the thousands of people Bob taught stockdog handling. I freely admit, I was far from a natural and I made lots of mistakes. Bob was so kind, so patient and so encouraging that he has been a role model for me of what any instructor should be.

Our most sincere condolences to Bobs family. He spoke so often of his family to us on his many trips to our home in Texas.
There are not words to express our sense of loss for our dear friend. Fate truly works in mysterious ways. Bob was scheduled to be with us this past weekend but called us on Wed. to say he had hit something with his truck and wouldn't be able to make it. This twist of fate allowed him to be at home when he left this world and I know this is how he would have wanted it.
Bob was a guest in our home 3 times a year for many years and touched so many lives. His dedication to helping people and their dogs will be so missed. His face and voice will be in my head as well as many others, every time I walk onto the trial field.
We love you Bob and will think of you often.
Sincerely,

Bob meant so much to me, and taught me so much. Life lessons. Bob knew this, because I told him more often than he probably wanted to hear! Bob was humbled at times, especially when he was told how much he and his teachings meant to someone. But I am glad that I shared that with him, and that he knew how much he and his teachings had changed my life. Bob was very special, very talented, and very giving. He will be missed by so very many, but he will forever live in my heart by the many lessons that he taught me early on. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Bob is coming!
Tuesday, February 24, 2009
I’m bursting with excitement. My dear dear friend Bob Vest is driving up from Iowa to see me tomorrow. The last time I saw him was at the MN State Fair in August. He danced a jig for the audience in the coliseum to bagpipes no less. His dog is used to his antics and just stood there patiently waiting. Mr. Bob is somewhere in his 70’s now and as vibrant as ever. How I love this man! We went for lunch after that with all the competitors from the herding dog trial. It was so wonderful to see him. We walked down the street holding hands to the consession stand. He is one of those extraordinary individuals that you never expect to meet let alone get to know. And he is the first person to demonstrate to me that someone could be a conduit for passing energy to another person through touch.
How much would I have missed had I just been drifting through life with no physical hurdles to jump. Sure there have been some very unpleasant times but also amazing times too along the way. Mr. Bob’s part in those times is most dearly held by me. He helped me learn to be hugged and to hug back. I realize how strange that sounds now but I’d forgotten how there for a while. So it’s time to celebrate...do a little dance...sing a little song...Mr. Bob is coming to town!

I was just amazed at his relationship with his dog Lynn and how well he could get the other dogs to work. I was hooked on herding at that moment. i have been to several of his clinics since. I have learned a lot from him. He was truly a great man. My heart and prayers go out to his family. May God Bless you and may Bob Rest in Peace with his beloved dogs.

I think everyone hopes they have helped to make the world a better place while they are here. Bob certainly did that. His generous spirit and willingness to share his knowledge and experience helped us learn a gentler, kinder way to understand animals and people better. I will greatly miss anticipating being a part of his clinics and sharing meals-listening to his stories.
Over the years, his influence has been so strong, I hear his voice when I am working my dog. I will take some small comfort, knowing the memory of his teaching will still whisper to me and help me along. I feel lucky to have known him. Rest well, Bob. We will miss you so much.

I feel blessed to have been been able to learn from Bob, although it has only been for the last 5 yearsm twice a year at clinics. He saw things in me and my dogs that no-one else did. He taught me so much, and I will hear those words in my head for the rest of my life, when I step into the herding arena to train.
His knowledge and his ability to transmit it in a way that made sense to any level of student was a true gift. Watching him read a dog was a clinic in itself.
Apart from that, his kindness and his geniality were truly wonderful to be around.
Bob will be greatly missed by many, for a very long time. He has touched countless lives-of people and dogs.

knew Bob from clinics
Bob had the uncanny ability at the first session of a clinic to be able to pick up with each dog he had worked with as if he had never left and to read exactly what each new one needed as if he had known it forever. We spent the next months hearing Bob's voice in our heads and then counted the weeks until it was time for Bob to come again - then the 6 days he was here flew by much too fast. But Bob was far more to us than just a "trainer" - he was such a wonderful person - funny, widely read and knowledgeable about so many areas, kind to all even if he must have sometimes wanted to strangle one of us, so honest (if he said something complimentary about a dog or handler you know he meant it) and he was a born teacher - he could turn a few squiggly lines on a board into an arena filled with sheep, handler and dog and suddenly the light came on and something one had been struggling with became chrystal clear. Early February will never be the same again without him. He will greatly missed by so many.

He challenged me, pushed my buttons, and always encouraged me to try something new--out of my comfort zone. My condolences to the family. Bob changed and improved many lives, including my own. He was a friend, a mentor, a philosopher, a teacher; his gift of knowledge and sense of humor his hallmarks. Bob always made people just beginning in herding believe that they could go to the moon with their dogs, if that is what they wanted to do, and he never let anyone leave the field without mentioning something they had done well. He made you believe in yourself, while his penchant for practical jokes and a quick smile with those devilish eyes made sure nobody took themselves too seriously, including himself. How many times have we all heard “I don’t’ know anything, I just drive the slow bus”. I will miss him terribly, but treasure the memories and training he has given to me. My most heartfelt condolences to Bob's family. Perhaps you didn't know just how well-loved Bob was. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.
Although I live in Maine, I am one of the "Starshine Farm Family" in CT. Bob came several times a year for 12 years to guide us gently and with great kindness and humor -instilling in all of us a desire to becom better dog trainers, stock handlers, and most of all, better people. Through Bob came some of my most cherished friendships.
The last clinics Bob did were at Starshine Farm. That was less than 3 weeks ago. We were so fortunate to enjoy his company and his teaching, his good humor, and his company for 12 days of clinics and trials -- We all settled into a blissful routine of working dogs, swapping stories, sharing meals. Bob worked us all pretty hard but at the end of each day he would generally comment "we had good work today".
I believe that Bob's teaching was a ministry, that the message was as much about how to live a life with generosity, kindness, humor and purpose as it was about dogs and livestock.
We all felt confident in our abilities as dog trainers when Bob was beside us, offering us guidance and encouragement -whether it was starting a puppy on ducks or a young dog on cattle or fine tuning that last panel to the center obstacle, but we all felt his absence keenly, in between clinics when he wasn't there to advise us when we were working on our own. I jokingly suggested that it might help all of us to get some t-shirts made that said "We walk with Bob" so that we could feel as though he was there helping us.
I know that we all feel his presence strongly, and in truth, for all of us who knew and loved him, Bob walks with ALL of us.

I am so sorry to hear about Bob. I went to one of his herding clinics years ago, very naïve about dogs and ignorant about herding. Bob was so patient and willing to share and work with me and my dog. At the time, I thought I had a problem dog and was so worried about him. Bob very patiently worked me through it and I’ll never forget that experience. After that he gave me a schedule of where he was going and I was like a “groupie” and traveled where ever I could to get into a clinic with Bob. When I pulled up he always said, “Hello, Chicago!” I don’t think he ever remembered my name, but he knew me. I will truly miss Bob. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

I only recently turned 18. My parents, Tim and Pat, along with myself have been students of herding under him for many (I would like to say ten) years. I am not close to my grandparents and I proceeded to "adopt" Bob as my grandfather in every way but blood. I loved him dearly as such too. I am so so sorry for his loss and give all my greatest wishes to his family. I never met them, but I heard soo much about them. He would always ride with me and my father to school in the mornings when he was here and his last visit, March, he made a point to tell me it was the last time he would be able to, as I was graduating. He truly was a huge part of my life and I believe that when Mr. Vest passed on, the world lost an angel. I will absolutely never forget him. I can only hope the gates of heaven know what they're in for...

One can not think of an Australian Shepherd stockdog without thinking of Bob Vest. His breeding program is evident today in the world of stockdogs. The Australian Shepherds that are commonly called “Vest Dogs” or Vest Bloodlines have shown up at the Australian Shepherd Stockdog finals for numerous years. These dogs are proudly represented by Rachel Vest, Jan Weson , Elsie Rhodes, Steve Shoppe ,and many others. These aussie dogs are on farms and ranches being used for what they where bred for. His breeding program is established and will continue to represent his love for the breed. The stockdog world has lost an expert in training, trialing and handling of all herding breeds. Bob worked with numerous breeds and people in creating a stockdog and a dog /person team to work stock. He will always be remembered for his courage, fortitude, endurance and persistence in the dog world. God Bless you Bob, Heaven awaits. I had the pleasure of auditing several of Bob's clinics in Connecticut over the past 4 years while my passion for herding was blossoming, but the ULTIMATE experience was being able to participate in one of them with my young dog. Bob's gentle demeanor, humorous comments and patience with my many blunders put me and my dog at ease immediately. Every word that Bob spoke provided insight into working better with my dog. At the end of the clinic, with no one else around, Bob quietly said to me, "You've got a nice dog there." I will cherish those few words forever. But, I am not alone; Bob made a special connection with all of us and gave each his own special moment with him. Our loss is great, but I'm certain Bob is in his heaven filled with wonderful working dogs.

He was a gifted teacher and knew when you needed encouragement with what our clinic ended up calling his "Pearls of Wisdom" and when you needed to be set straight on your training abilities. I will also always remember that he remembered that my husband and I had adopted a little boy from Russia and he never failed on first seeing me at a clinic he'd say "How's the boy doing?" Whenever I go out to work my dogs, I always feel that Bob is on my shoulder coaching and encouraging me and I believe that I will carry that gift throughout the rest of my herding days. I believe the herding family has lost a true family member. Bless you Bob Vest for all your gifts to us.

I have known Bob for barely a year, having been a student at five of his seminars this past year. Even during this short time, I came to admire and enjoy so much about Bob's teachings.....not only about herding, but in dealing with life itself. His wisdom, kindness and patience were generously given to all who knew him, and delivered with such wit and good humor. For those who had the good fortune to know him even longer, I can imagine how much his passing must leave a hole in your lives. Yet, at the same time, how lucky we were to have known Bob and had our lives touched by him. My deepest condolences to his family and many friends.

I cannot fathom how many lives Bob has touched, and how many of us feel his loss. So many of us in the herding community changed the way that we train our dogs thanks to Bob. He knew dogs, and he knew people, and he loved both in a very obvious, generous way. My thoughts, and those of countless others, are with his family in this sad time.

I do not think there is enough room in this cyber space to hold all of the good memories and thoughts that could be collected about Bob. He had a way of seeing things, and helping you to see also. I hope you take comfort in knowing he made so many people feel better about theirself, and passed that quality to do so on to others. Thanks and God Bless you all. Mary

Bob - cannot thank you enough for all your wonder and inspiration. You always made a point to make everyone feel involved and successful. I admired that most about you, and there was alot to be admired. You were such a cheerful, positive person to be around and easy to work with. "Danny Boy" is doing well, and he too, thanks you for all your help and guidance. If it weren't for you, we'd still be wearing circles in the ground, wondering which end of the sheep to chase. My condolences to your family and all who knew you. You were a rare gem, and this world will miss everything you had to offer. I know our loss is Heaven's gain. Once in a great while, if you're lucky, someone special comes into your life. Bob was one of those special people who came into our lives. The words "teacher" and "friend" do not describe the relationship that Bob was able to create.
He was a person with great knowledge, warmth and humor all of which he willingly shared.

Thank you Elaina & Carolyn for sharing your dad with us. We met him 15 years ago after getting our first Briard. The dogs remembered him year to year and picked up right where they left off. He looked forward to the Fairfield clinic as we would bring him homemade kefir every day. He became a self-proclamed spokesman for our goat dairy!
Bob was a very gifted man. Finally 2 years ago "I got it". I got the picture when he said "dance with your dog" It helped that I had a pretty good little dog that he offered me $3. for. He told me to trial her. Had never done that before, but we jumped in. His only request was, call me after your runs. He got alot of phone calls the last couple of years!
We love you Bob, give Webley a pat on the head for us, and we'll be seeing you. Hope you remembered your cane so you have something to sit on up there.
We gotta end with your famous words " there, now wasn't that pretty".

There are truly no words to express how much Bob will be missed by those of us who knew him as a mentor, all-around "dog person" and general, all-around good guy.
I will never forget Bob taking time out of a clinic to help someone with a border collie who was scared around other dogs. Bob showed us all how to "read" the dog and the people and show compassion for all involved.
We'll do our best to keep things moving forward.

I wasn't prepared for Bob to leave this world yet. I had so much to learn from him. My deepest sympathy to all of his loved ones, and always remember his great generosity of spirit.I know his Aussies were his love but he certainly was able to show that generous spirit to other breeds as well. I have English Shepherds and Bob was the only clinician I knew that knew my breed, really knew them, having grown up with them. He took the opportunity to help us in our effort to show these dogs did exist and could work any time he could. Even filled me in on his history with the breed saying they were the farm dog of choice until everyone decided to get a "blue dog". He would tell people at clinics what they were and speak positively about them. It was always deeply appreciated, because what Bob Vest said about dogs carried some weight with it. Bob's insight into the world and ability to share that will be known and missed for a long, long time. May he always rest in peace.

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Bob's family, and to the "Aussie family" he left behind.
Although we did not have the privilege of knowing Bob personally, he has influenced may of our mentors, peers, and the Australian Shepherd stock dog itself. His impact was like a pebble cast into a pond. The ripples from that single force extend to the far reaches of the pool, even though the stone had no contact with the shoreline. Such is the legacy he left the Australian Shepherd community. The ripple that touched us personally was seeing George Frey and his "Vest" dog Grit working stock at the first trial we attended. Not only did the hospitality and warm welcome we received keep us interested, seeing a dog of that caliber was a catalyst for striving to be better handlers and breeders.
Bob left a legacy that will continue to inspire and enable the Australian Shepherd stockdog community to strive to be their best.
God Bless you Bob, your family, and all those you have touched.

I've thought alot about Bob the past few days. I always referred to him as my 'Uncle Bob' - the cool guy that you loved to hang out with, the one who you always managed to take life lessons away from each encounter.
Enjoy your dogs. Enjoy your friends. Enjoy the weather. Enjoy the food (oatmeal and peanut butter!). Enjoy and keep tinkering. Do your best. Be your best. Share your best. Help others. Be kind to others.
So many life lessons. I know that Bob touched many, many people. And I'm sure we'd all say that he was our special friend and teacher. He had a way of making you feel that way. That you had value, that your dog had value.
A big hole is left in our hearts from Bob's passing. I'll miss my Uncle Bob.

We are so deeply saddend by this great loss. Bob was a mentor, a teacher, an inspiration to so many people. Bob was the most knowledable dog person, I've ever know. Bob was kind, caring and passionate about his work. I'll never forget his smile, the sparkle in his eyes, his love for his dogs and his gift of gab.
Bob was like an ever changing river, sometimes he took you to the deep end, sometimes the shallow, but it was always alive and moving. He was constantly thinking, changing and researching to help us reach our goals.
He will leave a deep void in our lives. We should all be so fortunate to touch as many lives as Bob touched. He was truly a legend in the dog industry.

We would celebrate the beginning of the New Year with Bob, we had him for the first weekend in January for a clinic in AZ. Bob liked home cooked meals so we would all sit around the dining room table after we ate super and talk, laugh and tell stories. He always had stories or an opinion about something. Bob never said anything negative about anyone, he would always find something positive. Bob was full of information about dogs and training and always ready to help you improve. We have lost someone very special and I'm not sure if anyone can fill those boots. We will all meet up again at the Rainbow Bridge and Bob will probably be having a Clinic.

To Bobs family we offer our most sincere regrets. Bob was our friend and teacher and much of what we are with our dogs we owe to Bob. Doyle said one day Bob called him and said I have a puppy for you. Doyle said I don't need a puppy but Bob said this one will make you and he was right. That was Bud and he was a dog of a life time. Bob knew. I was a real city girl and Bob told me you can do it if you try. I was strictly conformation with aussies but I tried with Bobs help I became an AKC Herding judge and learned how to herd. His help is what gave me the instruction as well as drive to really learn. I have much to thank and lots of love for Bob. He will be missed and I have a Vest Bred Dog to carry on for him. It was a shock & I let out a "Oh, no!" when I received the news that Bob had passed away. I was hoping he was part Energizer Bunny and would be here forever, but knew deep in my heart that Heaven would eventually call.
The world was a truly better place with Bob in it. When you were in Bob's presence there was a certain feeling of serenity that was unexplainable...it seemed to fill the whole room at those morning clinic talks. Bobs ability to bring out the best in people and dogs was a gift to each and everyone of us who received his wisdom.
My last clinic with Bob was this past Spring in Bow, WA. I won't forget watching Bob work a young dog for someone there and thinking of the living, moving masterpiece that was unfolding in front of me. It wasn't very often that we would see Bob work a dog for someone else...I can only remember two instances.
Bob at this same clinic had recommended to me to try drinking Kefir and I always think of him when I pick up a bottle at the store. I had to ask a clerk the first time I tried to find it if they sold "Kefir." He looked at me real funny as I'm sure he thought I said "Reefer" and was loaded cuz he responded with a sheepish smirk, "You want what?!"
Bobs stockdog hat sits on the dash of my van...a memoire full of his inspiration.
My deepest condolences to family and friends. Thank you for sharing a truly amazing human being.

Condolences to his family and friends, want to say how I appreciate his devotion to his family in the Vinton area; he spent a lot of time away but you were always with him. I have to say I am thankful for the blessed way that he left this world;
resting comfortably in bed, but still a vital working member of a loved way of

Everyone has shared great memories and I personally treasure his gifts to me, letting me experience living with his line of dogs and I will continue to appreciate the part of him I got to know with having a canine companion descending from his good aussies, striving to maintain valuable traits. I realize now how blessed I was to meet him at a special time in his life, Robin and Lynn were pups, his training skills were just getting to the fine-tuned stage and I was privileged to see him dance with his own and others dogs many times. No doubt he will, generous as always, come back to visit us and dance with us again.

I met Bob at a herding clinic in Washington state with a Border Terrier on the end of my leash. I had been told that Bob was open to working with non-traditional breeds and he certainly lived up to this billing with enthusiasm. In Bob I found a tinkering soul mate. He inadvertently issued me a training challenge when he casually said he hadn't figured out how to teach a dog to back down a ladder. Several months later when he was once again teaching the local clinic, I was thrilled to see his face light up, his eyes sparkle, and his infectious grin spread from ear to ear as I walked into the lunch room with a ladder in my hand and my terrier on the end of the leash. I treasure his good humored outburst of "I hate you!" as he watched my Rufus, the herding Border Terrier, climb the ladder and then carefully back down. His delight and hug were genuine and straight from his generous heart. Thank you, Bob, for sharing your joy for life and all its marvelous challenges and your love of tinkering with a dog.

Thank you, Bob's family, for sharing this wonderful man with so many of us. I met Bob about 8 years ago and have been eagerly awaiting his clinics ever since. He taught me so much about dogs, herding and people. Over the past several years I have often found myself feeling in need of a Bob "fix", for after every clinic I had a new outlook, not only on training my dog, but on approaching life in general. His patient positive attitude was infectious, and I would come back to the city with renewed energy and optimism about life, friends, and the world in general. I live in an apartment in Manhattan, and don't always have the most opportunities to work my dog. My dog is a rescue aussie and my first dog to train in herding. That never stopped Bob from helping me. Bob told me several times that when he goes all over the country giving clinics, that he tells everyone about me--just as an example that no matter the situation and what your hardship/handicap might be, that YOU CAN DO IT. It made me so proud to be one of his many examples. Most of the lessons that Bob taught me about building a relationship with our dog and training carry well over into life and our relationships with people and the world. For Bob, nothing was an insurmountable challenge, but instead he encouraged us to look at everything as a training or learning opportunity. Just that one little piece of advice can change your whole outlook on life. I am going to have to rely on that now, since I will truly miss Bob, and will have to learn to live without his amazing wisdom, kindness and friendship. I feel so fortunate to have known and loved Bob, and for the friends that I have made through Bob and his love for herding dogs. I am sorry that I have not had the chance to meet his family, but I would be willing to bet that they are pretty special people. Thank you for sharing him with all of us. My thoughts are with you now in this difficult time. I hope it helps you to know how many people loved him and will remember him forever.

We considered Bob a friend. We didn't have many we respected as much as we did him.
He loved and respected dogs. He tolerated most people. He was a better man than most.
Rest in peace, good friend.

Bob was an amazing animal trainer and shared his gift with the people he worked with. He told a story I will always remember that went something like this.....
There were three dogs and three handlers. One dog was very talented - strong herding instincts and was owned by a man who had little time and or patience for this dog's overenthusiastic approach to stock. The second dog was mediocre but mildly talented and shared his herding career with a handler who was indifferent about goals, wasn't driven to win but was content with doing an average job with this dog. The third dog lacked natural talent and had little ability on its own but the owner of the dog admired the dog greatly in spite of what others called a lack of talent. Dog number three and his handler, went to clinics, practiced religiously, and no matter what dog number three did, owner three praised the dog for his efforts.
At the end of the one year, dog number one was in a pound waiting to die because he was unmanageable, too much for owner one and in spite of his wonderful ability, was never well understood. Dog and owner number two were still putting along, doing an average job and really hadn't changed much over time. Dog number three and his owner were winning everything, the dog progresssed and excelled at everything he did while his owner stood by him, gave him confidence and believed in him.
Bob showed us all how to believe in the dog we had. And to believe in oursleves. Bob was sincere in his wish to see people and their dogs succeed. To work with them to give them the confidence they needed to get the job done. In life, Bob supported me and many others by being that kind of friend.
Thank you to the family and friends of Bob for sharing this wonderful man with all of us.
I will miss my friend, my mentor, and a great man who influenced my breed and others, in so many wonderful ways.
Rest in Peace my Friend, I will see you again.

I offer my sincere condolences to Bob’s family. This is a great loss to those who knew him as a trainer and friend but I hope you know how thankful we are that you shared him with us. We truly feel like he was family and so looked forward to seeing him again and again at our family reunions (clinics).
Our clinics with Bob made us work harder and love it. He made us reach and exceed our goals for ourselves and our dogs. Bob instilled in us the confidence that we could do it because he told us we could every time he saw us. Better yet, he SHOWED us that we could do it and rejoiced with us in doing so. He made me trust my dog. He allowed the dogs to figure things out for themselves and not become little robots who can’t think without the handler telling them what to do. Bob's playful cajoling helped us through our frustrations - especially when we “ran out of handler”. He teased me mercilessly (but out of affection not malice) and reveled in being teased back. I joked with him that he hadn’t YET made me cry at a clinic, but I may have made him tear up with frustration in attempting to get me to understand something. As he would have said with a wicked grin, “You always was a little slow…”
Each clinic he gave us “another tool for our toolbox” and a piece to work on until the next time we were together. Although my toolbox is not yet full, it has many tools in there because Bob helped us put them there.
Mr. Vest, you did it right by being at home and going peacefully but we selfishly wish you had had another 20 years in you, though that would still not be enough. We are very, very lucky to have had any time with you at all. Words simply cannot express how much we will miss you, the lessons we learned, stories we heard and the laughter shared. Even without the loud speaker I hear your voice each and every time we work stock. I’m just so glad that after the first clinic was over I finally stopped hearing, “Stop staring at your dog!” I hope that made you smile that wicked grin we already miss so much.

I am so sorry for your loss. Bob was a true original and a great, decent, kind and positive man. I am honoured to have shared time with Bob at herding clinics over many years. He had a gift for making people feel good about themselves and their dogs. Thank you for sharing Bob with us. I have written a long post with photos on my blog about Bob, which I invite you to read. They are my personal memories of him. The address is http://spiritdancedogs.blogspot.com - Last year I moved to Alberta, so when I saw Bob in July in Thunder Bay, I gave him a card and thanked him for being part of my herding journey. He was so supportive, and he said "Herding changes your life, doesn't it?" But I know now that it was because of Bob that I became interested and got on this path in my life. I will miss him. Again I am sorry and I hope the outpouring from the people whose lives he has touched helps to heal and comfort you at this time. Although I knew Bob a relatively short period of time, he touched my life deeply. I remember him with joy--the twinkle in his eye, his big heart and generosity of spirit, his laughter, the sharing of his profound knowledge and experience. I think of Bob as the "buddha" of herding--a true teacher, innocent and wise, possessing the curiosity of a child and the wisdom of a sage. Bob reminds me that how one lives his life can be an inspiration. I heard Bob say more than once--"Herding changes your life." So true if you embrace the journey with open arms. Bob--you inspire me and I celebrate your life.

My thoughts are with Bob's family during this sad time. I'm so sorry for your loss Thank you so much for sharing him with us. I took my first clinic with Bob about 14 years ago and have attended many others over the years. I was amazed at his ability to read the dogs(and the livestock) and show us how something as subtle as position of a head or foot can have a big effect on the outcome. I was ever in awe and always wondered on my way to a clinic what Bob have in store for us as he sure kept the clinics interesting and entertaining. He was always full of metaphors, parables and life lessons that went way beyond just training dogs. The clinics were always loads of fun. I remember one clinic where he started doing Tai Chai in the middle of a trial arena. Who but Bob? His sense of humour is irreplaceable. He taught me to lighten up and appreciate the little accomplishments. The world has lost a wonderful dear man that will be missed by many.

My heart goes out to his family and friends. Bob offered so much of his knowledge to others who wanted to learn and grow in herding. He truly was a steward of sheperding, he understood what the dogs job was, what the humans job was and what your jobs together were. He understood stock - horses, cows, sheep and dogs. Bob you will aways be with us, sitting on someones shoulder who needs your encouragement.

Though I had only met Bob once, years ago, at a herding clinic, I was so very sad to hear of his passing. I had attended the clinic with an older Border Collie that had always wanted to be a sheepdog, and basically did it just for fun, since I had very little knowledge of herding and no real plans to continue with it. My dog and I both had a wonderful time, thanks to the fun exercises Bob had us do, and also due to his friendly, upbeat attitude. He never once let me feel like I was wasting my time, or talked down to me as a newcomer. Afterward, I approached him to ask about a dog he had once owned that was also on my dog's pedigree. He generously took the time to relate several stories about that dog, even though other people were patiently waiting with training questions. I always hoped I'd have a chance to attend another one of his clinics, and am so sad that I will not be able to do so now that I am finally "hooked" on herding. I'll never forget his kindness as an instructor, or his fond recollections of a dog he owned many years ago. My sympathy to his family and many, many friends.

I met Bob just a few weeks ago and was able to participate for about 20 hours over the two weekends he was in Gaylordsville, CT. I was so impressed. The way Bob dealt with each dog and his handler was amazing. His ability to assess each handler and their dog was uncanny. His explanations were sharp and succinct. I had come as an auditor, after my own dog had passed. When i asked Bob about roughcollies as sheep dogs, he said the best sheepdog he ever saw was a rough collie and he went to van and from the windshield, he pulled a card with Mary Oliphant's number on it. "Call her" he said. And I did. While the last puppy she had was sold earlier that day, she put me in touch with a nearby breeder whose dog was related and who had just had pups. It would have delighted me no end to have shown Bob my new puppy, Major Tully. Because of Bob i have anew best dog. Every time I am near him I think of Bob. I hope we can live up to his expectations.
It is rare in one's lifetime to be so incredibly impressed with someone. Bob Vest is one of those rare people. My heartfelt condolences. He will be truly missed.

Just 2 weeks away from seeing Bob and we get this sad news. As I think back on my experiences with Bob over 7 years of clinics I can't help but remember his wit, his thirst to obtain and pass on knowledge, his devilish little grin and his huge heart. To be in the presence of this man was a priviledge. To be in the presence of this man during a belly laugh was inspiratinal and life changing. Bob always said he liked a good wreck since it was an opportunity to learn and grow. I wish him continued good wrecks and for the rest of us to remember his grace so we can learn from ours. Bob, we will be going to get ice cream in your memory. I expect you will still be yelling at me when we next meet. To his family, God's Peace as you move forward. I haven't seen Bob in over 25 years but came away from the visitation with such great memories of wonderful past times in the horse barn at the Lazy M, Bob tending to the horses needs and dispensing his great wisdom of animals. Bob and my wife, Betty, had a special relationship. He frequently did nice things for her when he came, and when she started having walking problems, he brought her a cane he had carved out of a tree branch. A treasured gift. Although I have only known Bob for about the last 10 years, ever since I met him, my life has revolved around when I could next go to a clinic.
Bob was incredibly special, and had a way of teaching that was relevant not just to herding but to all of life. I learned much more about life then herding.
Although I only saw Bob at clinics, I count him among the 3 people who have had the most impact on my life.
Bob had a way of both being supportive, and pushing for you to stretch out of your comfort zone.
Everyone who has been fortunate to know Bob has been enriched, and he will leave a lasting legacy around the world.
To you, his family whom he loved so much, I cannot imagine your grief and sense of loss.

Bob has been a major part of my life for the last 12 years. Although he was brilliant dog trainer and motivator, I will remember him most because of his kindness and patience to everyone I ever saw him work with. It wasn't always the easiest thing to do.
My fondest memory may be from a recent clinic when we were sitting relaxing at the end of the day and Bob was all stretched out on a chair with his arms crossed over his belly and grinning. I looked at him and then looked at the pup lying at my feet that he was grinning at and then I looked back again and he was still smiling at that pup. So I had to ask him why he was smiling and he just said " He looks like my dogs" I just smiled in return and we shared the moment.
The pup that was at my feet is my youngest "Vest" dog and I am really looking forward to the future and hope I do Bob proud.

I had the opportunity to work with Bob once, at a 3 day clinic in CT this past June. The man I met and learned from possessed wisdom, patience, self control and a boyish sense of humor. I talked to him every morning during that clinic at 6am when he was walking his dogs, and I gobbled up every piece of knowledge he threw our way at lunch time. After that clinic I can honestly say that there has not been a day that I have worked with my dog and not thought of Bob…. He was just that kind of person. After reading all the condolence messages I realize Bob was an incredible man who touched so many lives & I'm honoured to be in the company of so many loving & compassionate folks.
I had the extreme pleasure of auditing 2 of Bob's clinics, at Asher-Dell Farm in Malabar, FL that changed my life & my dog's forever.
Bob had been informed (or warned) of "Blarney" my rescue Border Collie, so our first meeting was him knowing who we were w/o introduction. (Our reputation proceeded us!) So, Bob matter of factly told me to put Blarney in a "down" & Blarney immediately bit me & drew blood. Patiently, Bob took out his white hanky & began to "fix" my hand & at the same time informing me, "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT DOG THAT CAN'T BE FIXED. HE'S LIVING ON THE FEAR/PANIC/SURVIVAL SIDE OF HIS BRAIN." From that moment on our lives changed & by the end of the seminar Blarney was a calmer, happier dog, but with much work to do before Bob returned the next year.
Well, Blarney & I did work & with the expertise of Judith Kelly we improved & Blarney earned his Junior Herding Title in January '09.
When Bob returned for his next clinic I showed him the pictures of Blarney at the Trial "doing his thing" to which Bob simply said, "SEE I TOLD YOU HE COULD HERD."
So, Bob touched my life & heart more than I can say. I will truly miss him & especially since he never got to meet my new dog "Asher-Dell Tyler". Bob would be very proud of him , but still expect Blarney to excel.
Bob's belief in people & their dogs was an innate ability that few are Blessed with & he gave you the knowledge to use to be successful because suddenly you believed in yourself & had the courage & strength to set goals & achieve them.
I believe Bob is at the RAINBOW BRIDGE where he'll share his wisdom with all dogs that arrive & when he greets BLARNEY,(none too soon, I hope), he'll SMILE & Blarney will puposely do a "down" & I'll know Blarney's in good hands, again...
Thank you to his family for sharing him with so many. He will live on in our hearts & our achievements with our dogs.
BLESS YOU,
Deb & Blarney

I am sitting here dumbfounded at learning of Bob's passing. As you can tell from the date I'm posting this....the news of his death did not reach our family, until I googled his name to find out if he was doing a clinic anywhere near here.
I hadn't seen Bob in nearly 25 years. I talked to him once about 10 years ago. I grew up in an Aussie family, going to shows and working trials in the old ASC-Mid America. Bob was a constant staple and figure at these Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa shows/trials. I'm going back 30 years in my memory to remember Bob as always the guy who paid attention to me and made me laugh.
The last time I saw him was at a show/trial in Salina, KS in the mid-80s. He was so clever, charming, and funny. A vivid memory of Bob at that show was when he walked up to me and said: "What kind of person do you like being around? Someone warm and fuzzy, or a prickly personality? I said warm and fuzzy. He handed me a cotton ball from behind his back. I asked him what I would have received had I said prickly personality, and he showed me a small cactus. He was doing this with lots of people at the show and had plenty of cotton, and cacti to disperse. He was as much about people as he was dogs.
About 10 years ago, after many years without an aussie, I bought an aussie pup. I asked my dad, who'd trained and judged many a successful herding dog, what I needed to do to get the pup started on herding. Dad said...the first thing to do is call the best. I knew who he was referring to, and I called Bob. We had a great conversation that I remember vividly.
My biggest regret is the time, a couple years ago when my dad and I were going to attend a Bob clinic in the area, just to visit him, but couldn't make it work with my schedule. Then to see this news on the internet has me dumbfounded.
To Bob's family....he was a master trainer and wonderful humanitarian. I thank God that I knew him. Glad to know he was peaceful when the Lord told him "That'll do."
